Ah, the City of Brotherly love. What a pleasant snowy Sunday…
Now back to studying… *grumble grumble*
Decided to take a Sunday drive philadelphia for some food before my finals this week..
The city looks beautiful with the first snow of the season
I thought of this post from December of 2010 when LOLadelphia was less than 1 year-old while digging my car out just now. It’s still relevant three years later. Only in Philadelphia does the first significant snowfall of the season make people say, “Damn! Time to bust out the lawn chairs!” Happy shoveling.
As opposed to a phrase that is actually spoken via the human mouth and tongue, this is a rare case of a gesture saying more than words ever could. Last year, Philadelphia had its snowiest winter on record. As a result, many Philadelphians had to take part in the irritating cycle of digging a car out of the snow only to have it snowed in again a few days later, and then having to dig it out again.
To make matters worse, Philadelphia had to rely on its public works as well as that unreliable whore Mother Nature to clear the snow out. The result, in typical Philadelphia fashion, was that very little snow was plowed or cleared from our city streets. Therefore, many Philadelphians decided to use a lawn chair to voice their frustrations about trying to find another spot. After digging their cars out, Philadelphia’s residents would place any kind of chair (and it was ALWAYS a chair) in the space vacated by their car while they ventured out to work, to the store, etc.
What does the chair mean? The chair represents a collective attitude that not only recognizes the fact that parking in Philadelphia sucks, but also has the underlying message of, “Don’t you DARE steal my fucking parking spot.” The chair is also symbolic of the unwritten code. I took the time and energy to dig this space out. I was kind enough not to block your car with the snow I shoveled. This spot is mine, and if you take it, I might just break your jaw.
We will most likely see several chairs on the side of the road after today.
